MARTIN Atkinson has been confirmed as the referee for Chelsea’s Premier League showdown with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The experienced 43-year-old, from West Yorkshire, will oversee the London derby between league leaders Chelsea and fourth-placed Arsenal.

He will be assisted by Fifa linesmen Stephen Child and Mike Mullarkey, with Jon Moss assigned to fourth official duties.

Atkinson took charge of both fixtures between the two sides in the 2010/11 campaign, including a 2-1 Chelsea win in west London.

He endured a difficult time in last weekend’s Merseyside derby at Anfield, turning down strong penalty appeals for both teams as Everton snatched a late 1-1 draw at Liverpool.

The Bradford-based whistler will first take charge of the Champions League group stage encounter between Bayer Leverkusen and Valencia at the BayArena on Wednesday night.
